Protection of Pipeline by means of fibre optics in Madagascar

There is a dedicated corridor on the East cost of Madagacar for all pipes going from the port to the respective terminals and mining plants. This corridor goes through a coastal village and due to the economic environment prevailing the local people within the vicinity drilled holes in the pipeline every time there is a tanker offloading.
The risk of fire and explosion was the main concerned of the local authorities and terminal owners.
We came with a proposal of fibre optics which can detect any vibration and eventual digging at +/- 20cm precision. We had to dig the whole trench on 6,5Km and installed the fiber optics on 3 side of the pipeline and connect them to the dedicated control centre on the terminal. This system proved his efficiency from 106 Drills to 0 drill within the 1 year of operation.
